A pre-production Fordson tractor arrived in the UK in January and after government representatives travelled to the States to view further tractor demonstrations in October, an order for 5, was placed and in December the first shipment of arrived in the UK. Initially known as the MOM Ministry of Munitions tractor, by it was called the Fordson and ever since it and its successors have remained a key part of farm mechanisation. Because Henry Ford did not get the backing of the Ford Motor Company board to go into tractor production he and his son created Ford and Son or Fordson for short. By it was known as the Model F and hundreds of thousands were built at Dearborn and Cork until it was phased out in By this time Fordson had become a major player in the tractor game on both sides of the Atlantic. When the new UK factory at Dagenham opened in it was an improved version the Model N that rolled off the line. Although it was becoming dated compared to the lesser number of American produced Lease Lend tractors, the low cost, simplicity and sheer numbers meant Fordsons were everywhere. When Ford could only offer a stop-gap tractor in the E27N Fordson Major became another iconic machine which held its own alongside the more sophisticated Ferguson, Nuffield and David Brown tractors launched in the immediate post war years.

The Super Dexta did not go into production until April and the serial numbers started 09B. Dextas after November started 09A. Your tractor should have a vacuum governed pump and no production Super Dexta was ever fitted with this style of pump. It also should NOT be fitted with a dif. However, one gentleman on the YT Mag site, some weeks ago was claiming he had a Super Dexta with a number similar to yours with a vacuum governed pump even though the serial number showed he should have had a Dexta.
The serial number of the Fordson Dexta is stamped on the flange between the engine and clutch housing on the left hand side of the tractor. The castings codes (clutch casting, rear axle casting, gearbox casting, hydraulic lift casting) can also give an indication of year of manufacture.
We will show unique features and list serial numbers and other identifying marks. We will attempt to list some, but certainly not all, of the noticeable changes made to each of the models throughout the years. By documenting these changes and features it will hopefully aid in correctly identifying the tractors and be a help to restorers who want their tractors to be “as original”.
Model 9N – The Ford model 9N tractor was introduced in mid-year as a joint venture after a handshake agreement between Henry Ford and Harry Ferguson. Commonly known as the Ford – Ferguson tractor, Harry Ferguson designed the 3 point hitch and hydraulic system while Ford’s engineers designed and built the tractor and made it all work together. The 9 was for the year, , and N was Ford’s designation for tractor.
Serial numbers on the 9N-2N and 8N tractors are located on the left side of the engine block, just below the head and behind the oil filter. Try different angles and light sources to make the number visible. There will always be either a star or a diamond at the beginning and at the end of the serial number. You will only see the diamonds on 8N tractors with a serial number after 8N All earlier 9N-2N-8N models have the stars.
All models made after the 8N will have the diamond markers. All serial numbers will begin with either 9N or 8N followed by the number.
History[ edit ] The Nebraska tractor testing law had its roots from when Wilmot Crozier, a farmer and legislator from Osceola in Polk County, bought a Ford tractor. Not made by Henry Ford Co. Universal Hobbies produce a Fordson Major tractor attached to a key ring! In fact it is so close to the Oxford model in detail and scale I at first took it to be the same casting. The most important difference is that it doesn’t have the shiny front axle, the front wheels are held in by two plastic pins. The other difference is that it only has a rudimentry exhaust stack and the attachment for the keyring which is a tab with a hole where the drawgear would be.

Model Tractors Tony Shaman The saying that little boys play with little toys and big boys play with big toys may not always be true. When it comes to miniature tractor collecting, big boys often play with little toys. And, judging by how quickly farm-machinery dealers and toy tractor retailers sell out their new models, grown-ups take their hobby seriously. Model tractor enthusiasts come from a wide cross-section of the population but it is probably fair to say that retired farmers make up a good proportion of miniature tractor aficionados.
As youngsters, most farm boys played with a toy tractor “just like dad’s” or, at least, they imagined that their prized toy was a miniature version of the real one that their dad used on the family farm. After growing up, these youngsters may have pursued a variety of careers but most will have memories of the happy hours they spent playing with their farm machinery toys. Now, years later, a toy display in a department store window, or perhaps an illustration in a sales catalogue, may have rekindled those long-ago memories and another model tractor enthusiast is added to the fold.

The gears differ from the originals in that they are made from one piece of tufnol rather than having a bush in the centre.
